Diversity. End Discrimination."- Law School Atrium. 4-6pm
Our mission at Human Rights Works is to empower the community of Indianapolis to address human rights issues locally and globally through education, action and hands-on experience.
Our Objectives
We are a grassroots organization committed to using a holistic approach to human rights work. Our basic objectives respond to the needs of our diverse and changing Indianapolis community.
Human Rights Works addresses these needs:
By Providing Human Rights Education: Every child and adult in our community should be aware of their own universal human rights.
By Addressing Local Human Rights Issues: Empowering others to confront injustices within our own community to raise awareness of local human rights concerns.
By Providing Resources for Human Rights Workers: Support to human rights activists locally and internationally through training and scholorships promotes human rights work.
Human Rights Education Program
International human rights law supplies a mandate for all people to receive a human rights education. The purpose of Human Rights Works (HRW) Human Rights Education Program is to awaken Indianapolis citizens' civic understanding of the purpose and function of human rights. HRW promotes global understanding, peace and respect for all people through the following human rights education initiatives:
Education Reform: To develop new legislation for mandatory human rights education for grades K-12 in Indiana schools in order to foster a culture of tolerance and respect for the dignity and human rights of others.
Curriculum Development: To work with educators, administrators and human rights specialists to develop age appropriate human rights education curriculum for grades K-12.
Human Rights Training Programs: To offer workshops, camps, professional development and other specialized programs aimed to train the Indianapolis community in universal human rights.
The Human Rights Works Education Program goal is to work towards eliminating all forms of racism and to promote social equality and justice.
Local Action Program
Human Rights Works (HRW) will systematically investigate how human rights issues are impacting our community. We will provide information to the public and encourage public participation against injustices faced by the community while working with local government agencies to find solutions to remedy any abuses of power or other injustices identified.
The issues HRW will address are those affecting our local community.
Human Rights Works looks to partner with other local organizations, schools and public agencies.
About Human RIghts Works
Human Rights Works (HRW) was founded in the summer of 2008 by a group of lawyers, educators and advocates who have lived in the US and abroad. We noticed a gap in the Indianapolis community’s exposure to basic human rights principles.
In Indiana, we are an international community comprised of people from over 100 nations, yet many of us do not know the history and structure of the basic rights that we share with the rest of the world. Trained and practiced in international human rights and community advocacy, the staff at HRW is committed to bring to light injustices faced by members of our own community.
Human Rights Works will teach our community about human rights by addressing these injustices and others faced by communities in other parts of the world, thereby training and supporting new human rights practitioners to continue this work locally and internationally. By addressing these injustices, and through educational outreach, we connect our community in Indianapolis to the world.
